Mr and Mrs St John-White from London wanted to increase the size of their bungalow with this big new Edwardian conservatory. They contacted Extend a Room, and last year this beautiful spacious sunroom was installed at their property in London.
The challenge

The patio area where the Edwardian conservatory was to sit had previously been backfilled with tons of concrete to create this stepped up patio area. The customer had decided that this was the area where he wanted his sunroom to be. If the company had used traditional methods, this concrete would have had to be broken down entirely and removed, and the digging would have started in order to put in a traditional brick and concrete foundation. To have the Edwardian conservatory in this position, it his would have been a colossal, messy and expensive job which would have taken a couple of weeks on its own.

Furthermore, there was a network of drains running under the patio that undoubtedly would have been dislodged and pulled up along with the removal of the concrete, requiring their replacement. In short, this was a project that would have been a major headache without Extend a Room, and their quick no fuss methods of installing sunrooms and conservatories!

The solution

This site in London was just perfect for Extend a Room to show all the benefits of its steel base system, which removes the need for traditional foundations. After careful site measurements and calculations, the team came up with the dimensions of the super strong steel base. At Mr and Mrs St John-White’s property, the installers needed only to cut out the small areas of the concrete patio that were required to support the steel legs of the Edwardian conservatory base. They Left the concrete in place and installed a raised insulated steel beam floor over the top of the existing concrete patio area.

Then, to create the required height to connect onto the bungalow fascia, the company fabricated their unique designed aluminum box gutter system. This allowed them to raise the pitch of the roof to the very high pitch, and create the appearance that the customer wanted. The roof was squared at the corners to maximize the internal spacer. Finally, the frames were green, which complimented the bungalow and its surroundings perfectly. Not all conservatories have to be white! Multiple colours are available and in fact any colour of your choice can be made to order, giving the customer complete control.

The result

Mr and Mrs St John White from London knew exactly how they wanted their new sunroom to look. There are many Edwardian conservatories in London, but this one is just perfect for the customer. Their sunroom is big enough to have a dining area and a family seated area too. Enjoying the comfort that comes from a spacious room, they can sit back and enjoy the peaceful views out over the garden all year round. Filled with natural sunlight, this Edwardian conservatory is a delight to look at, and to look out from.
