Mr and Mrs Cross are a retired couple from Newton Abbott in Devon. They had an idea to extend their property and create a more comfortable area to relax in, and contacted Extend a Room to see if they could make their dream come true. Early last year they had a lean to conservatory installed at their family home in Newton Abbott in Devon.
The challenge
Sometimes there can be a choice of where to position a new sunroom, but often the site itself dictates where the position has to be. In this case, the obvious spot was to position the lean to conservatory using 2 existing walls at the property, which were at right angles to each other. However, connecting 2 walls presents the technical issue of how to cope with rainfall drainage issues to avoid any leakages into the sunroom. Both walls are not the same height, and the height of the sunroom may be different again, according to the wishes of the customer. Often walls in this situation, having been standing for many years, are not precisely square and even, which can be difficult to work with.
Mr and Mrs Cross from Newton Abbott in Devon aren’t the only home owners to want to make a feature of an unused part of their garden. Extend a Room took over the responsibility of making it happen for them. It was up to the technical know-how and ingenuity of the company’s surveyors and designers to ensure that the installation was planned in advance to anticipate the drainage difficulties. Rainwater that runs down two roofs can create problems for lean to conservatory roofs. Sometimes, a build up of natural debris such as twigs and leaves will alter the direction of the water, which can create blockages in the gutters, leading to water ingress into the sunroom.
The solution
A full site inspection was carried out at this property, carefully examining the conditions of the 2 walls and assessing their suitability for the lean to conservatory in mind. It was decided that the best solution would be to bring the new conservatory away from the right hand wall entirely, by a short distance. Solid white panels were inserted into the conservatory wall frames at that side, to conceal the wall outside and give a finished appearance.
At the site, the company used their double skin aluminium box gutter, which is purposely designed for their lean to conservatory roofs. It allows all of the rainwater to be gathered and dispersed evenly without any chance of leaking whatsoever.
The result
There are many different lean to conservatories in Newton Abbott in Devon, but Mr and Mrs Cross are extremely delighted with their choice. Using the company’s experience, they were able to bring a formerly unused part of the garden to life. With its glazing from floor to ceiling on two walls, the lean to conservatory has created a wonderful area for Mr and Mrs Cross to enjoy, with beautiful sunlight streaming through. Not only that, but it has also increased the value of their property.
