Mrs Arnold and her family from live in a charming farm cottage in Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire in South Wales. They wanted to extend their cottage with a beautiful new upvc lean to conservatory.
The challenge

The first challenge for the company arose from the location of the property. Situated in the hills of South Wales, on a very steep single track road climbing high into the mountains, it was quite remote. Unlike Extend a Room, many smaller companies will not consider doing business in rural areas, as the high cost of fuel for each visit and delivery can increase the cost of the job to an unreasonable level. Also, the actual time spent in hours to drive there and back is again another cost to be considered.

Llandeilo in Carmarthenshire, South Wales is such a wild and beautiful location that it’s easy to see why people live there. However, Mrs Arnold’s cottage is positioned where it’s open to the elements all year round. This would have a big impact on any sunroom. Whilst the warmer months of the year would be wonderful, with pleasant natural sunlight pouring in, the new lean to conservatory would need to be strong enough to stand up to everything that the Welsh winter could throw at it; wind, rain, or snow.

The solution

Fortunately the company can rely on the expertise gained from fitting many thousands of lean to conservatories all over the UK, not just locally in Llandeilo in Carmarthenshire. The company’s logistics team works carefully to ensure that the sunroom base works, frames, glass and roof can be delivered by a Transit size carrier that can negotiate those rural narrow lanes. They also plan to deliver as much in one journey as possible, to keep the costs down for everyone.

The unique Extend a Room super strong steel base system is delivered pre-cut in steel bar lengths so that once on site at Llandeilo in Carmarthenshire, the fitters can readily assemble it on top of steel plates fixed to concrete pads on the ground at the side of Mrs Arnold’s cottage. This ensures that the base is more than strong enough to withstand the entire weight of the sunroom. All Extend a Room’s wall frames are fully steel reinforced to provide the strength needed to cope anything the British weather can hurl at them. These are fitted to the bases, and a 50mm under floor insulation is installed, to make sure the new lean to conservatory has a warm floor even in winter. All the components are bolted together with full metal jacket steel wall bolts for complete stability.

Once all the panels are bolted and connected correctly, the sunroom roof is fitted to complete the job. In this case, the company went the extra mile and fitted aluminium wall plates to the uneven stone cottage wall, and then with some clever lead work made sure that the new sunroom was fixed permanently to the cottage. Silicone sealant was applied painstakingly to remove any worry of rainwater leakage. The job had to be right first time.

The result

This stunning light oak framed lean to conservatory has provided the finishing touch to family life for Mrs Arnold and her family at their home in Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire. The frame colour blends beautifully with the cottage. Not every conservatory has to be in white!

Sitting in her new lean to conservatory in comfort, whatever the weather outside, Mrs Arnold can relax and really enjoy the stunning views out over the fields and castle beyond, every day of the year.
