Mr and Mrs Hughes from Worcester, in Hereford & Worcestershire wanted to maximize the potential of their property and create some extra room in which to enjoy family life. They contacted Extend a Room late last year, and asked them to send a surveyor to give a free survey, and make them aware of all the styles of sunroom available. They chose this beautiful new Edwardian conservatory.
The challenge

A common challenge when constructing an Edwardian conservatory is to ensure that the design of the sunroom with its elevated roof height suits the property and blends in with the building and the gardens. Too often one sees Edwardian conservatories which dwarf the house, where the new sunroom is simply out of proportion.

Mr and Mrs Hughes from Worcester, in Hereford & Worcestershire wanted to create a dining room within this new upvc Edwardian conservatory, so that they could enjoy family meals in peace and quiet, enjoying the view of the garden. Thus the dimensions of the new sunroom needed to accommodate the dining room suite, allowing easy clearance around the table and chairs.

As with any Edwardian conservatory, careful planning had to take place to ensure that where the sunroom joined the house all seals were watertight, and that there would be no leaks or overflows at either the gutters, or through the new roof itself.

The Edwardian conservatory would look out onto a garden wall, which was less than attractive, so that there needed to be a way to hide this.

The solution

Extend a Room has designed and built many thousands of conservatories all over the UK, not just locally in Worcester in Hereford & Worcestershire. Consequently, Mr and Mrs Hughes were able to draw on this expertise when deciding on the size and shape of the sunroom. For example, the surveyors quickly solved the brick wall problem to one side by replacing the sunroom windows with white upvc panels. You can see how well this worked by looking at the pictures on the website.

Once the sunroom sizes were established, the design and planning team could start to work on the drainage system. Deep flow gutters were installed around the roof line on top of the conservatory wall frames. A special “Y” branch adaptor was fitted to direct the rainwater from the new roof into the existing upvc gutter down pipe of the main property.

The result

This new Edwardian conservatory is just the ticket for Mr & Mrs Hughes. They can relax around the dinner table in their spacious, light and bright new sunroom. Their dream has come true, and they enjoy their new room all year around, filled with natural sunlight. As a bonus, they’ve added value to their property in Worcester in Hereford and Worcestershire as well!
