Mr and Mrs Stone from March in Cambridgeshire live in a lovely old house on the edge of an inland waterway. They had an old sunroom which had seen better days, and wondered if they could have a modern replacement. They contacted Extend a Room, and this beautiful new bespoke Edwardian conservatory has now been installed at their property in March, Cambridgeshire.
The challenge

This site in March, Cambridgeshire posed a couple of serious challenges. The house sits on the verge of an inland waterway, and is not accessible by a van or lorry – and it’s a long walk from the nearest road. Every piece of the old conservatory, once demolished, had to be removed by hand, barrow by barrow to the skip outside of the house. Of course, the site would have to be kept tidy so as not to create any hazards to Mr and Mrs Stone at any time.

The old, falling apart sunroom had to be safely dismantled, and then the installation of the new modern, insulated, double glazed new upvc Edwardian conservatory could begin. A full scale dig out for a concrete and brick foundation would have been a colossal and very messy job, costing thousands, and taking months, given the fact that every load would have to have been hand made on site. The company needed to come up with a better plan than traditional methods could provide.

The customers wanted the floor of the conservatory to be raised so that they could enjoy views over the waterway, and the company’s engineers had to make calculations to accommodate the water table that the house stood on.

The solution

The old timber conservatory was taken down carefully and removed to the skip. Now works could start, and here’s where Extend a Room’s unique steel base system comes into its own! Using the data from the survey of the site, the factory got to work manufacturing the base in the correct steel gauge to easily support the large upvc conservatory. The legs of the steel base were extended in order to provide the elevated floor level for the conservatory that the customer wanted. Once fabricated in the factory, the steel base was dismantled and sent to the site in March, Cambridgeshire. The installers carried it in steel sections on to the site by hand, and assembled it onto the steel plates on top of concrete pads. The upvc frames and windows were delivered and fitted on top of the base, so that in only a day or two the new sunroom was taking shape.

Finally, the bespoke conservatory roof was pitched up high in the middle to ensure the new Edwardian bespoke sunroom had enough height to create an airy, bright and spacious feel to the new room for Mr and Mrs Stone.

The result

Of the many different conservatory styles in March, Cambridgeshire, Mr and Mrs Stone’s is just the ticket for them. When the company revisited them, it was amazing to see it how well integrated the new sunroom was into family life, used daily as a dining and living area. Overlooking the garden and waterway and filled with natural sunlight, their Edwardian conservatory looks stunning. Now with a new plan under way to have decking installed, Mr and Mrs Stone’s home life has been transformed.

Another happy customer for Extend a Room!
