Mr Cahill and his partner had an old conservatory at their home in Tottenham, London, which they wanted to replace with a new Edwardian conservatory. They contacted Extend a Room, and in the middle of last year they had their new sunroom installed at their property.
The challenge

The customer wanted to have a clean bright and spacious addition to his home at Tottenham, London. The old lean to conservatory at the property had had its day long ago, and needed to be dismantled and removed. Its floor levels were a lot lower than the house, and the roof line was too low, creating a cold damp room which no one went into except in the height of summer.

The site for the new Edwardian conservatory needed to use two existing house walls. Whilst this is a common enough requirement, it can create rainwater drainage issues at the junction where the two roofs meet, with a danger of water ingress into the sunroom. The natural tree debris of leaves and twigs can easily create blockages if the guttering is not perfectly fitted.

Mr Cahill and his partner from Tottenham, London wanted the finished floor covering to flow smoothly through the lounge and into the new upvc Edwardian conservatory, avoiding the previous differing floor levels. As a final design touch, he also wanted to have a low brick dwarf wall in his sunroom.

The solution

Anticipating the drainage issues, the company installed their unique aluminium box gutter system. This system of guttering allows the rain water to run freely from the gutters of the property, and not back up until the water overflows into the inside of the conservatory.

At the site survey, careful measurements were taken to ensure that the steel base of the new sunroom would be constructed at the exact height required to ensure there would be no difference in floor levels into the new room.

Because the company manufactures the steel base at its own factory, these bespoke dimensions were not a problem.

The dwarf walls are made in the company’s unique steel box unit at the factory, with marine ply liner and Styrofoam insulation hidden behind the brick exterior. The inside of these steel boxes are plasterboard lined with a window board ledge.

The result

The company have built many Edwardian conservatories in Tottenham, London, and Mr Cahill and his partner are delighted with theirs. It really is the new focal point of their home. With its stunning and spacious glass vaulted roof, mirrored walls to one side and clean upvc lines, it’s a vast improvement on the old room that once stood there. And Mr Cahill has increased the value of his property, too.
