Steel Base Conservatories - Things you need to know

With Extend-A-Room, you can opt for a steel-base for your room extension. We have already completed over 5500 of these with great results.

We are the manufacturer, so we handle all of the fabrication. This means as a customer, you avoid lengthy waits for deliveries and we can work faster to avoid other hold ups like weather issues.

Delivery Day

Your conservatory quote and survey will be turned in to a factory order by our engineers. Then your entire conservatory will be manufactured and delivered ready for on site assembly and installation.

Having the whole unit delivered ready for installation ensures that the builders can work with very few hold ups or having to leave site to collect materials. Having pre delivery means its vital that you spend the necessary time at the conservatory quote stage, taking care to ensure your ideas are all translated in to the manufactured product.

Steel Base Day

A structural Steel Base is a very quick way to create a foundation for a building. Its usually much more commonplace when building stadiums and other much larger structures. Extend A Room has brought these tried and tested methods of construction to residential buildings and overcome lots of problems that a customer might normally experience in having building work done at home.

Don't worry if you have a sloping garden or lots of drains and pipes - each steel base is manufactured to exact specifications from each individual site survey. Every unit is made to measure. Steel joists also allow a perfect area for insulation to be installed giving a warmer floor surface unlike concrete which will be colder.

The structural steel base replaces a traditional base and can be spec'd to extend for decking. EXTEND-A-ROOM have been at the fore front of steel base manufacturing since 2005.

Installation

Once the steel base is complete, the skeleton frame of your conservatory will be installed. Your new room can be virtually ANY SHAPE, SIZE OR COLOUR. Your combination of walls / windows / roofs and doors will fit together in a kit type fashion, having been pre manufactured specifically for your installation. Very little cutting and fabrication is left to be done on site.

The size and complexity of your conservatory will determine the time it takes to install but an average size and style room is typically built in two days start to finish....ready to decorate. If you take time at the conservatory quote stage you will see a room appear like magic within a day or two meeting all your expectations. Handover

In most cases we will survey, quote, manufacture, deliver and build within a 4 or 5 week lead time. We can process planning permission applications on behalf of clients too.

Then, usually within a day or two of arriving on site to start building - we will be handing over a sparkling new room - ready to decorate and move in to.

Dwarf walls will usually add one day to the time it takes to build on a steel base.

Architectural Home Extensions typically take three weeks to build, start to finish as they are much more complex in every way.

Traditional Base Conservatories - Things you need to know

Some of our customers want the traditional brick, block and concrete base to their conservatory and we do this too.

This method is completed using the highest quality materials and the highest build standards and takes longer than the innovative steel-based approach fast becoming a favourite with our customers.

We encourage customers to consider the benefits of the steel method as it is quicker, works very well and is not as heavily impacted by weather delays ( traditional builds can be set back due to poor weather conditions) but we are very happy to offer this alternative.

Strip Foundation Concrete Raft

The foundations of your extension can built in two traditional ways.

Strip Foundation: The time involved in doing this work is largely weather dependant. If the dig out is large and there is clear access then we may utilise a mechanical digger.

Once the trench is complete and concrete base is set, a foundation wall will be built up to the damp course level.

Concrete Raft: An area of shuttering will ensure a tidy and specific area is formed. Concrete rafts will usually have a closed cell insulation core, helping make the floor warmer in cold months. Site specific details will be worked out at your survey meeting.

Concrete Floor Slab

With the base set to the agreed floor level the concrete will be set in place, inside the foundation wall.

Where possible this will be well insulated, as per the Concrete Raft in Step 1. The weather and temperature will play a part in this process as concrete only sets in certain conditions. Please take this in to account in the build time process.

Dwarf Walls

Next, the builder will build up the walls with facing brick as per the specification or with blocks that can be rendered later for a period or modern exterior finish. Facing brick is commonly used on the inside. The inside of the dwarf wall can also have a plaster board finish for internal decoration. These details will be worked out with you at point of survey.

Conservatory Installation

The final stage is to build up the window frames, glazing and roof sections. Then clean, seal and internal final building tasks are completed to leave the new room ready to decorate.
